Bang! How many times have you been in a car as it drove over a big pothole? Followed by the accompanying wallop as the wheel hits the road again and slams up into the car. Thankfully suspension saves us from the worst of that impact and makes a drive more enjoyable by smoothing out smaller road imperfections.
Similarly, the human body has very complex suspension built in. While your knees absorb large shocks by bending and distributing force through muscle action, it is your feet that are designed to smooth out smaller bumps in the ‘road’ through movement of the joints and small muscles within.
For healthy feet, less is more. Your foot is most free to move when it is not in any shoes. If you wrap a foot tightly and strap a solid platform to the sole, it’s not going to move very much, limiting its shock absorption for the body. This causes stress on the ankles, knees, lower back and further into the body and reduces muscle tone within your feet. Regularly walking bare foot or wearing minimalist shoes can help to keep your feet functioning and moving properly, exercising those intrinsic foot muscles, building a healthier foundation.
Come in for a chiropractic checkup and your Free Foot Scan Analysis. We will assess the joints and muscles of your feet to keep them functioning optimally, keeping in mind their importance for the rest of your body and where necessary prescribe customised orthotics. Even the best suspension requires the occasional tune-up.
